Introduction
Port Commerce Originally opened by the City of Newark in 1915, the Port Authority operation started in 1948. Port Newark covers 930 acres. It has over 23 thousand feet of berthing space. Its channel is 40 feet deep, 685 feet wide, and 7000 feet long. Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal, in Newark Bay, is the main container ship facilities for goods entering and leaving the region around New York City and the Northeastern United States. Its two components are operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The facility lies within two cities, Newark and Elizabeth, New Jersey. Port Newark-Elizabeth is the 15th busiest in the world. But as recently as 1985, it was the busiest. It still holds the record for the largest volume of imports from Germany of all U.S. ports, with over 2.6 million tones in 2006. Port Newark has experienced a 65% increase in traffic since 1998. In 2003, it moved over $100 billion in goods. Today, efforts are underway for improvements worth billions of dollars. The Port Authority built Port Newark-Elizabeth in the 1950s. It's the third biggest container port in the U.S. The Port Newark facility holds two dredged slips and many loading cranes. Port Newark's completion made most of New York Harbor obsolete and led to declines in several New York City areas. Because the facility is largely automated, it requires few workers and less container handling. Port Newark is a very flexible multi-purpose cargo center, containing wharves, deep-water ship berths, and 3 million square feet of buildings, specialized facilities, road and rail access. Today, the Port Newark Container Terminal is one of the most advanced on America's East Coast. It boasts 4400 feet of deep-water wharf, and it can handle more than one million containers.
