Introduction
Ningbo Port consists of 5 port areas of Beilun, Zhenhai, Ningbo old port, Daxie and Chuanshan. It is a modern comprehensive multifunctional deep-water port, combining inland, estuary and coastal harbors. now there are 191 operational berths including 39 deep-water berths with 10,000 and more tonnage. The larger ones include the 250,000 tonnage crude oil terminal, the 200,000 tonnage ore discharging berth (also for 300,000 tonnage ships), the specialized terminal for the 6th generation container vessel and the 50,000 tonnage berth dedicated for liquid chemical products. Up to now shipping lines have been opened to more than 560 ports of over 90 countries and regions. The main business of Ningbo Port covers handling, storage and transshipment of imported iron ore, container for foreign and domestic trade, crude and finished oil, liquid chemicals, coal and other bulk and genereal goods. The cargo throughput of Ningbo Port in 2003 reached 185 million tons. Following Shanghai Port, it ranks 2nd among the coastal ports of mainland China. The rapid development of Ningbo Port benefited from its unique natural conditions. By now the port's throughput capacity and cargo throughput have all surpassed 100 million tons. There are 110 shipping lines for container transport and 480 regular liner services per month. The first 20 shipping companies of the world have all set up their agencies in Ningbo. There are complete port inspection set-ups in Ningbo, which are speedy and efficient in work. From May of 1996, all the inspection and service set-ups of Ningbo entered the port area and worked together, undertaking coordinated services of customs declaration, inspection, finance, insurance, ship agency and cargo agency for customers. From the end of June of 1999, approved by the Customs Administration General, the business of through clearance between Hangzhou and Ningbo was formally started, facilitating cargo owners in Hangzhou district to go through locally the formalities of customs declaration of international container, exchange settlement and drawback. The through container transport between Hangzhou and Ningbo reduced transshipping links greatly. At the same time, storage yards for international container were built at the industrial park of Jinhua City and a commodity inspection organ was set up at the through supervising spot from Jinhua to Ningbo Customs House, providing an economic and convenient passage to the sea for the inland areas of Zhejiang Province. In order to speed up the construction of a deep-water hub port and a main line port for international container to suit the needs of developing international trade and ocean-going container transport, many super large terminals for international container will be planned and built in Ningbo Port. By 2007 a first-class international deep-water hub port and a main line port for international ocean-going container transport will take an initial shape, serving as an outer deep-water port for Shanghai International Shipping Center. Ningbo Port will also be the leading logistics enterprise of Ningbo and Zhejiang. By then 5 transshipment bases for container, crude oil, iron ore, liquid chemicals and coal, as well as the port logistics information platform will be completed and put into operation. Cargo throughput is to reach 250 million tons, making Ningbo Port one of the 5 largest ports of the world. The port will own container throughput of 7 million TEU to rank among the first 15 ports of the world and among the first 4 of China. Natural conditions Ningbo Port is well situated in the middle of China's coastline, at the T-shaped joining point of China's coastline and the Yangtze River. It's a famous deep-water port of mainland China. It enjoys unique natural conditions with convenient traffic reaching in all directions. Outwardly the port links East Asia and the whole round-the-Pacific region. It's within 1000 sea miles to Hongkong, Gaoxiong of Taiwan, Pusan, Osaka and Kobe It connects inwardly Chinpa's coastal ports and covers directly the whole East China and the economically developed Yangtze River Valley by river-sea through transport via the Yangtze River and the Grand Canal. It's therefore an ideal place for developing ocean-going transport to the ports of America, Europe, the Middle East and Oceania. With deep water and smooth current, the port area of Ningbo is free from strong winds and waves. The entry channel is normally over 18.2 meters deep. Large ships of 250,000 up to 300,000 tonnage can come and leave at tide. With an exploitable deep-water coastline of over 120 km, Ningbo Port owns broad developing and construction prospects. On the north of Beilun Port Area, Zhoushan Islands serve as its natural defense, so there is no need to build breakwaters when constructing berths at Beilun Port Area. Less investment can produce better benefits. Besides there is a wide and plain dockland behind the deep-water coastline, which is extremely good for developing port storage, warehousing and littoral industry. Port Surroundings An all-positioned, stereoscopic transport network of collection and distribution has taken an initial shape at Ningbo Port with expressways, railways, airway, river-sea through transport and water-to-water transfer. Water to water transshipment: Ningbo Port connects inwardly China's coastal ports and covers directly the whole East China and the economically developed Yangtze River Valley via the Yangtze River and the Grand Canal. Cargoes may reach directly Wuhan and Chongqing by river-sea through transport. Highway: Shanghai-Hangzhou-Ningbo Expressway, Hangzhou-Nanjing Expressway, Ningbo-Taizhou-Wenzhou Expressway and Ningbo-Jinhua Expressway have all been open to traffic. The great bridge across Hangzhou Bay is expected to be completed in 2007. Once completed, the traffic time from Ningbo to Shanghai by land will be reduced to 2 hours. The deep-water advantages of Beilun Port Area will be further brought into play. Railway: In-dock railways stretch to the port apron and link with the national railway network via Xiaoshan-Ningbo Railway, making it easier for inland provinces and cities to conduct export trade through the port. Sea-railway through transport of container has been formally started at the rail CFS of Beilun Port Area. Airway: Regular flights from Ningbo to Hongkong have been opened at Lishe Class B International Airport of Ningbo.
